Hartsfield-Jackson Boasts One of the World’s Largest Passenger Complexes
Atlanta’s ambitious $5.4 billion expansion of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport will increase capacity by a third, adding a new runway and a new international terminal. It is the largest public works project in the history of the state of Georgia. Economic impact studies suggest the financial effect of the airport’s business revenue — already $17 billion a year will reach $32 billion annually by 2015.
Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International
Airport, on 3,750 acres, fills one of the
smallest footprints for a major hub airport as
described in Hartsfield-Jackson’s Master
Plan, yet its central passenger terminal
complex is one of the world’s largest at 5.7
million square feet. The 168-gate terminal
includes Concourses T, A, B, C, D and E,
and the 1.7 million square-foot International
Concourse connected by a 3.5 mile underground
transit system. Construction has
already begun on recommended expansions
and improvements for the Hartsfield-Jackson
Master Plan expansion, which will include a
new fifth runway, an expanded international
Concourse E, consolidated car rental facilities,
and an additional south terminal with
at least 29 new domestic gates. The expanded
fifth runway will increase the arrival
capacity of Hartsfield-Jackson by approximately
50 percent, allowing three simultaneous
takeoffs and landings.
The airport’s 225,000-square-foot
atrium is a centrally located meeting area in
which travelers can dine, shop or relax while
waiting for a flight. Some of the atrium’s key
amenities include a Business Travel Center
with laptop and fax connections, a 100-seat
living-room lounge area, currency exchange,
shops, a full-service restaurant and a food
court. During peak travel hours, multilingual
translators — who altogether speak more
than 20 languages — are available at the
International Center at 404-530-2081 or
404-530-2082.
Outside the terminal, four parallel runways,
a fifth to be completed in February
2006, handle more than 2,400 takeoffs and
landings daily. Two major airline maintenance
facilities and more than 1.5 million
square feet of cargo facilities operate on the
site. More than 30,000 parking spaces are
available to the public, with thousands more
planned.
In 1999, Hartsfield-Jackson opened its
newest $34.5 million cargo facility, which
added 300,000 sq. ft. to the airport-owned
cargo complex, doubling its capacity. A $4.5
million fuel pipeline to the airport’s South
Cargo Complex was also completed.
Future passenger traffic and cargo volume
at Hartsfield-Jackson is projected to maintain
its ranking among the fastest-growing airports
in the country. In 1999 the 9,000-foot
south runway was reconstructed. Today,
Hartsfield-Jackson is moving forward with its
$5.4 billion expansion in preparation for the
121 million annual passengers expected by
the year 2010 and an Air Cargo Master Plan
is underway. When the airport’s expansion program
is complete, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta
International Airport will be one of the few airports
in the world designed to accommodate
more than 100 million passengers annually. |
